July 13 — Acts 10:1-23a

SCRIPTURE: Acts 10:1-23a

OBSERVATION:
Here we see the Lord at work on both sides of evangelism, preparing both the witness and the one being witnessed to. Cornelius is good soil (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23), open and receptive to God. Peter’s heart still needs to be opened more, to be released from the constraints of the old covenant code. The Lord speaks… through angels, visions, trances, and directly to our Spirit. But we must be open to hearing, taking time like Peter to be alone to pray. Apparently open, receptive, seeking hearts do receive from the Lord!

APPLICATION:
Am I open to hearing from the Lord? Am I taking the time away to listen? Is God setting me up for great opportunities (like Peter) but I am missing them because I’m not paying attention? I am reminded that witnessing is not a one-sided affair, the Lord is already at work in those that we witness to. Maybe its the religious framework (or code) that I’ve been raised in that hinders me, like Peter. Its certaonly not a part of my tradition to hear from God in this way.

PRAYER:
Lord, I’m sorry if my religious traditions keep me from hearing You and joining You in Your work. Open my spiritual eyes and ears, and help me to see and to seize the opportunities You make for me. Amen.
