Feb 11 — 1 Corinthians 9:19-27

Posted on February 10, 2007November 8, 2023 by Norm

SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 9:19-27

OBSERVATION:
Paul’s point is that though He is free in Christ from other peoples’ demands and expectations, he voluntarily becomes like others in order to win them to Christ.
He illustrates this with the Jews (v.20), the non-Jews (v.21) and the weak (v.22).
In relation to the law, Paul says that he is ”not under the law”, and yet that he is also ”not free from God’s law but under Christ’s law” – this distinguishes between the Law of Moses and God’s Eternal Law as revealed through Jesus.
Paul sees his voluntary enslavement as a way to share in the blessings of the gospel.
Paul reveals the intensity of his efforts, as if he was striving to win Olympic gold!

APPLICATION:
Do I share this passion for the message of Jesus, to win as many as possible, even if it means hardship or suffering for me?
Self-discipline and focus, two traits necessary for Olympic athletes, are critical for me as well.
What sacrifices do I need to make right now for the sake of the lost, to win as many as possible?
Does this passage teach that the way to share in the blessings of the gospel I need to voluntarily enslave myself to others (v.23, like Jesus)?

PRAYER:
Lord, give me a heart that is assionate for You, and for those who are perishing. Help me to be willing to sacrifice myself for their sake! Amen.

This passage reminds me of what is found in Romans 12 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. That is the JOY Principle for me. JESUS is first in all of my living. OTHERS come second since I am His and He in mine. In my living for Jesus I am a servant leader in my relationships to all others winning them for Christ. YOU (I) am in last place always, but in order to do the first two, I need to also look after myself so that I can be a servant leader. I may not be insistant on doing it my way for the sake of the Gospel, but His Way. That’s living for Jesus. That’s Christ’s Way.
Lord, use me as an instrument of Your peace, today and always. Be my Guardian and Guide as I continue my journey of learning of service. Lead me. Guide me along the way so that I will not stray.

think about it!

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.
