Reflecting on John 18:1-9“I have not lost one of those you gave me.” (John 18:9)
The author John remembers how Jesus spoke these words (see John 6:39).
It was just after feeding the 5000, when He says He is the bread of life.
This is not just about His disciples, but ‘whoever comes’ and ‘whoever believes’.
In this moment of arrest, Jesus know what is about to happen to Him.
He is ready to die FOR His followers, not to make them suffer and die.
Jesus is determined not to lose ANYONE… including me.
His mission is to rescue and restore us, not to ruin and destroy us.
These words reveal His purpose and passion, and why He was willing to die.
He knew that by His suffering and death, we would be rescued and restored.
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus does what He does to rescue us from the trouble in this world.
The disciples still struggled and experienced trouble – but they could take heart!
I remind myself of this when I go through seasons of struggle and trouble.
When I feel abandoned, or separated from Jesus, or lost and without hope…
Jesus is determined not to lose us, therefore we cannot lose Him!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, sometimes it feels like we are separated in times of trouble. In those moments help me to remember that You are not abandoning me. In those moments help me to remember that You will not lose me, and I cannot lose You!
