Reflecting on John 17:9-12“I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.” (John 17:9)
At first glance these words seem odd to me.
Why would Jesus only pray for His disciples, and not for the world.
Afterall, Jesus came because God so loved the world.
My assumption is that Jesus is not forgetting about the world.
But at this moment, as the ‘world’ is about to kill Him, He prays for His followers.
For believers, times of defeat or loss can be especially challenging.
When we experience tragedy or injustice, our confidence is weakened.
Jesus knows the disciples will scatter when He is arrested.
He knows that His non-violent approach will be too hard for them.
Jesus is not praying exclusively for them, but especially for them!
Jesus is expressing His very real human concern for His friends.
Judas is included in this prayer, even though He knows Judas will fall.
He included Judas in the last supper, and He includes him in His prayer.
Jesus will stand by us to the very end, even if we turn or fall away.
Jesus helps everyone, but especially those who struggle!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, right now I am not struggling, but I know many believers who are. I know You hear my prayers, but I ask that You would especially remember and help those who need You more than I do.
