Turning point tears

Posted on August 31, 2017August 30, 2017 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 14:66-72
“And Peter broke down and wept.” (Mark 14:72)
As I watch Peter in this scene, I sense Jesus looking at me!
‘How about you, how have you betrayed me?’
Ouch, it is easier to look at Peter and his failure.
Certain moments come to mind, ones that I am not proud of.
Peter broke out in tears because of what he did.
He is fully exposed to Jesus, and to himself.
Shame comes over him in waves, bravado melts into childlike weeping.
Jesus is still looking at me, ‘have you wept about your failures?’
Jesus does not want us to feel awful, but He does want to help us.
As long as I don’t face the ugliness of my sin, I won’t seek His help.
If I remain in denial, or hide from my moral lapses, I will stay stuck.
Most addicts do not seek help until they crash… tears indicate a crash.
But they also indicate a turning point, when the bondage of pride breaks.
Jesus is inviting me into a godly sorrow… that leads to healing and hope.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, the brokenness of tears is not pleasant, and yet it is healthy and helpful. Lead me to a safe space where I can weep like Peter, and hear Your gentle pardon.

In trials and temptations what will I do? Peter was over-confident but he turned to God. I need to hold fast to God and pull so I can prevail over the forces of evil. I need to stand upon the Rock. My anchor needs to hold fast. Strengthen my faith Lord so that I my never deny You but always walk in Your ways.

I have journeyed through the long dark night
Out on the open sea, by faith alone
Sight unknown; and yet His eyes were watching me

    The anchor holds
    Though the ship is battered
    The anchor holds
    Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees as I face the raging seas
The anchor holds in spite of the storm

I’ve had visions, I’ve had dreams
I’ve even held them in my hand
But I never knew they would slip right through
Like they were only grains of sand

    The anchor holds
    Though the ship is battered
    The anchor holds
    Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees as I face the raging seas
The anchor holds in spite of the storm

I have been young but I’m older now
And there has been beauty these eyes have seen
But it was in the night, through the storms of my life
Oh, that’s where God proved His love for me

    The anchor holds
    Though the ship’s been battered
    The anchor holds
    Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees as I face the raging seas
The anchor holds in spite of the storm

I have fallen on my knees as I face the raging seas
The anchor holds in spite of the storm

think about it!

We ought not to grow tired of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.
