Reflecting on John 4:15-19
“The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.” (John 4:18).
How did Jesus know the specifics of this woman’s marital journey?
I don’t believe that Jesus knew things because He was divine.
Jesus emptied Himself of divine ability and knowledge (Philippians 2:6-7).
The miracles He performed were done with God’s help, not in His own power.
This is also how the other disciples could perform miracles as well.
I believe that somehow God gave Jesus insight into this woman’s story.
God helped Jesus to know the situation, and to know what to do.
Jesus often spent time alone with God, seeking guidance and direction.
We can do the same, trusting the Spirit to help us with what to say.
The purpose is not to impress people, but to help them, to bless them.
Jesus does not use this information against the woman, or to His own advantage.
Like the God of love that sent Him, Jesus sees her deep struggle and need.
He isn’t condemning her, but putting His finger on a sore spot – to heal her.
When you see others, pay attention to God’s heart for them as you pray for them.
I believe God can give you guidance and direction for how to bless them.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me to see the people I meet as You see them, with the Father's heart. Help me to see their need, to understand their struggle. Give me insight and the words to help, heal and bless them!
