Reflecting on John 4:46-54
“So (this royal official) and his whole household believed.” (John 4:53)
This man works for King Herod Antipas (literally ‘belonging to the king’).
He knew Herod’s authority, how his word made things happen.
He also knew about Herod’s character, that he was not a great man.
This Herod, who divorced his wife to marry his sister-in-law, who beheaded John.
This man worked for Herod, but did he put his confidence in Herod?
When his son was sick, he didn’t run to Herod… he ran to Jesus.
When Jesus says ‘your son will live’, he takes Jesus at His word.
Through this encounter with Jesus, he and his whole household believed.
As followers of Jesus, we work for a variety of employers, some better than others.
To some degree we can trust them, but only in a limited way.
The longer we know them, the less we trust them them (ask Ann Coulter if she still trusts Trump).
Our faith should be in Jesus, not in our human leaders – work, government or church.
When we compare our leaders to Jesus, they will always fall short.
They make mistakes, they have blind spots, they serve themselves, they show favoritism.
Jesus, not _______ (name of any leader or authority), is the one we should trust.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, this applies to me as a leader too. Remind people that I lead that I am flawed too. Help me to point people to You, as the only leader they can fully trust.
