Reflecting on John 18:15-19“Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus.” (John 18:15)
This is the first time in all my years that I notice this other disciple.
Who is this disciple who is known to the high priest?
Most people think it is John himself, since he is telling this story.
Does the high priest know that this person is a follower of Jesus?
Why isn’t this disciple afraid of being recognized as a disciple?
I am intrigued by this other disciple, and his connection to the high priest.
Peter seems to get all the attention in the Jesus stories.
Other disciples are mentioned, but some get no attention at all?
Today as well, some disciples get all the attention.
We hear all about their strong faith… though also about their failures.
The lesson I am gleaning from this is to pay more attention to hidden disciples.
There are other disciples, unnamed and unknown, yet part of the story.
Peter was helped by this disciple to get into the courtyard.
Are there people helping me in ways I do not notice or appreciate?
Who are the hidden disciples around me, that are doing more than I realize?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You have many more followers than I know, or that I pay attention to. Thank you for the good work they do - unknown, unrecognized - and for the ways their good work is helping me in my faith life.
