Reflecting on John 12:12-19“See, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” (John 12:15)
This does not seem to be a majestic or kingly way to appear as king.
I have ridden on a donkey, and it is not graceful.
These words are a quote from Zechariah 9, describing God’s messianic king.
He will bring judgment against Israel’s oppressors, and break their power.
Yet it is hard to imagine a king waddling on a donkey doing that.
The king on a donkey is a symbol of calmness and peace.
There is no need for a horse and chariot, the enemy has been defeated.
This symbol shows us HOW the messianic king will establish peace.
It is through humility and peace that God through Jesus overcomes evil.
Our greatest weapon and strength IS the way of gentleness and peace.
This is also the way for us as Jesus followers to serve the king.
We follow Jesus in the path of humble, gentle, grace and peace.
This is not a weak way, it is God’s power at work, and it defeats evil.
We do not need to use force, manipulation, coercion, political power or threats.
Be humble, gracious and compassionate, and God’s kingdom will win!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Your way is God's way, and it is also our way of displacing the dominion of darkness with the kingdom of light. Forgive us for seeing You and Your way as weak. It is the greatest power in the world!
I too need to be a peacemaker. Have thine own way Lord. I need to like Christ unto others in myliving for Jesus. I need to be like Christ unto others. Grace and truth shall mark the Way where the Lord will lead. Jesus Saviour pilot me.
