Leaving my nets!

Posted on May 1, 2024May 3, 2024 by Norm

“They left their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1:18) How could they just leave their nets, what they had been doing for years. I wonder if they had second thoughts, or if their minds went back to the boats and nets and fish? It is interesting to note that after the crucifixion and resurrection, the disciples went back to fishing (John 21:1-14). I can relate to this with my sabbatical.

Today is day 1. As I begin my sabbatical, I am trying to let go of my work in my mind. I’m not in the office, nothing is expected of me. But old habits die hard, and my mind quickly jumps to thoughts about this or that churchy task or responsibility. This is to be expected, and it will take time. When it happens, I need to redirect my thoughts in a Jesus – not church – direction.

My hope for this sabbatical is to concentrate on being with and following Jesus. Not in a pressured, work-like way.

In the last few days people urged me to relax, to allow myself a time to rest. I really appreciate that reminder.

I will put down my nets, but I will also seek to be with Jesus, to find my rest with him. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

think about it!

To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.
