Oct 10 — Philippians 1:1-11

Welcome to Tony DeKoter, principle at Quisqueya Christian School in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, who will share his reflections on the readings from Philippians.

SCRIPTURE: Philippians 1:1–11

Paul begins this letter with a personal greeting while in prison. He remembers the works of God’s people here with joy because of their partnership in proclaiming the Good News. Paul expresses his joy when he remembers how they were willing to be used for His service. How do others remember me? What comes to their minds when they think about me? What will my epitaph read?

Wherever Paul was, he preached the Good News. All those who belonged to the family of God, Paul expressed his love and concern for them. He prayed for them. God’s people need to grow in their knowledge and understanding. I need to grow in Christ’s love so that my knowing = my loving = my doing. Lord I pray that my heart and my mind and my hands may all be in tune with You, Lord.

Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light.

  1. OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
    Paul seems to overflow… with love, with confidence, with hope, with joy, etc. In comparison I feel empty, like I’ve only a little to spare. He wasn’t content with just a sample, he wanted to “abound more and more”, and wanted this for others too. He did not let his “limitations” hold him back, he overflowed whether in chains or free to defend the message of Jesus. It inspires me to want to overflow!!!

    I am reminded of Paul’s words in Romans 12:11, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”

    PRAYER:
    Lord, may I be inspired and energized in my love for You, and in my passion for Your cause. Forgive me for half-hearted devotion, and set me o fire for You. Amen.
