Reflecting on John 14:15-24
“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.” (John 14:21)
Christians often stress that they need to obey the Bible.
The Bible is filled with thousands of commands – do we obey them all?
No Christian obeys them all, and each Christian has their preferred commands.
We need to be honest about this pick and choose method of obedience.
I admit, I do pick and choose which commands I commit to: the ones Jesus picked!
Jesus made two commands the gold standard for obedience.
Love God fully, and love your neighbour as yourself.
All the other commands hang on these two; love fulfills them all!
Those who commit to loving God and people are obeying God and Jesus.
How each person does this differs in their culture and context.
Jesus is a living demonstration of this kind of love.
Humble, gracious and compassionate; self-giving, other blessing love.
This is how God loves us, and how God calls us to show love.
The Spirit of Jesus is in us, helping us to live out His kind of love.
I know I do not live this way fully, but do I WANT to love this way?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we have made christianity about many things, but it seems we have missed Your way. May the world know that we are Your followers - not by our doctrines or lists of rules - but by Your love showing through us!
