Falling asleep and waking up!

Posted on July 28, 2026July 27, 2026 by Norm
Reflecting on John 11:11-16

“Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” (John 11:11)

Jesus uses ‘falling asleep’ to speak about Lazarus’s dying.
We have our own similar euphemisms and metaphors:
* To kick the bucket, to meet their Maker, to pass away
* To bite the dust, to be pushing up daisies, to give up the ghost
Usually these expression have some element of truth buried in them.

I’ve heard many people say (believers and unbelievers), ‘they’re in a better place’
I see this as a hopeful sign that something in them sees beyond death.
One benefit of the sleep analogy is that it suggests we will wake up.
We sleep for a time, but then we wake up to a new day.
There is something hopeful about this analogy, to encourage us too.

A young boy dying of cancer asked his mom what would happen when he died.
Holding back tears, she reminded him of when he fell asleep while playing with his toys.
The next morning he woke up in his bed because she carried him there.
When we fall asleep here in the ‘playroom’, the Father carries us in His arms to our bed.
And the next day will be a new day, with new hope and opportunities!

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, if we fall asleep, we will get better, we will wake up. You have broken the chains of death, and set us free from the fear of death. Help us to encourage others with this beautiful hope!

    A non Christian lives once and dies twice.
    A Christian lives twice and dies once.
    In Christ Jesus, we live eternally already here and forevermore passing through the doorway of death. We serve a risen Saviour. In Him we have life and life eternal.

    1
    I serve a risen Savior
    He’s in the world today.
    I know that He is living,
    Whatever men may say.
    I see His hand of mercy;
    I hear His voice of cheer;
    And just the time I need Him
    He’s always near.

    He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
    He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
    He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
    You ask me how I know He lives?
    He lives within my heart.
    2
    In all the world around me
    I see His loving care,
    And though my heart grows weary,
    I never will despair;
    I know that He is leading,
    Through all the stormy blast;
    The day of His appearing
    Will come at last.
    3
    Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
    Lift up your voice and sing
    Eternal hallelujahs
    To Jesus Christ the King!
    The Hope of all who seek Him,
    The Help of all who find,
    None other is so loving,
    So good and kind.

think about it!

And people who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives… and when the bubble has burst they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted.
