Reflecting on John 7:45-53
“This mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.” (John 7:49)
There was something different about Jesus’s message.
He spoke with a depth and power that impacted people deeply.
His message was at the same time comforting, convicting and compelling.
He backed His words with His actions, living out the love He spoke about.
Most people were drawn in by what He said… except some.
The religious leaders did not hear Jesus because they were immunized to His words.
They were so convinced that their reading of the Bible was the only way.
They were certain they were right, and everyone else was cursed.
They disfellowshipped anyone who did not agree with their theology – even Jesus.
Their religious beliefs closed them to God, not opened them up.
It was reading and rereading Jesus’s words that cured me of my religious certainty.
I used to think I was right too, until I heard Jesus; now all my confidence has melted.
I have thoughts, ideas and opinions, but they are all my own perspective.
I cannot criticize others for being wrong, when I know I am wrong too.
My only certainty is in Jesus and His message; He is the truth, not me!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, it is not my rightness or orthodoxy that set me apart, but Your gracious love and mercy. You alone have the words of life. I choose to listen to You, to focus on You, and to trust in You.

Yes. Jesus is the answer. I must be like Christ unto others. Be like Jesus by my words and deeds.
