Reflecting on John 5:31-47
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” (John 5:39-40)
These words have transformed my understand of the Bible.
I used to focus all of my attention on the Bible.
Now I use the Bible as a tool to focus all of my attention on Jesus.
I use and appreciate the Bible but I do not love it… my love is for Jesus.
The Bible is for me a meeting place where Jesus and I connect.
The Bible is a witness to the truth of God, secondary to that truth.
John, Moses, David, Isaiah, Peter, Paul… all of these testify about Jesus.
Jesus is the truth of God, the life of God, the glory of God.
He is the truth, the life and the glory that I long to see and hear.
Do you read the Bible, or do you talk to Jesus, with the Bible in your hand?
I fear the church has many people who know their Bibles, but not Jesus.
They can quote chapter and verse, but they do not reflect Jesus’s character.
Truth is not right information, it is a correspondence with God’s character.
As we come to Jesus, we become like Him, reflecting God’s glory and goodness.
If my Bible reading doesn’t make me more like Jesus, I’m reading it wrong.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I want to spend time with You, not just a book. You are God's Word to me, and in You I experience God's truth, God's life, God's glory! I want to know and study YOU!
