Reflecting on Luke 22:7-16“The Teacher asks: ‘Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’” (Luke 22:11)
As I see it, this was not a mind-reading or future-telling miracle.
They were expected, the host knew they were coming, and the room was prepared.
Like making plans for Christmas today, Jesus would have made Passover plans.
Jesus eagerly desired to celebrate Passover with His disciples.
And He eagerly desires to eat with us again, when the kingdom is fulfilled (v.16).
But even now, Jesus wants to eat this meal with His disciples.
He asked the disciples to continue the practice, in remembrance of Him.
It was His gift to His disciples: when You break bread together, I am with You!
Jesus made plans, and Jesus followers still continue to prepare this meal together.
Some churches share communion monthly or bi-monthly, others weekly.
We are in a church that celebrates communion weekly, and it is a meaningful blessing.
It is a constant reminder that Jesus loves us, and wants to celebrate with us.
For me sharing communion together is a reminder that Jesus is our host.
And we are the guests He planned for, the guests He is eager to eat with.
I am welcome, and so are you, and so is everyone: come, He wants you there!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, table fellowship with You and each other is a beautiful blessing and gift. Thank You for the repeated reminder that You've prepared a table for me, that I am welcome, forgiven and loved by God, and that I belong here with You!
Having a meal together with family and/or friends is true friendship, true hospitality. It shows fellowship. It also shows preparation. It also shows invitation to the meal. What a privilege, blessing to come to such a table. The Lord’s table is such a table where He prepared a place for us. As His disciple, I tooam invited to come to the meal set before us because I am His ans He is mine and His banner ovr us is love.
