PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 20
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“The Son of Man will be delivered over…” (Matthew 20:18-19)
Why does Jesus refer to Himself in the third person, as ‘the Son of Man’?
For the Jews, ‘the Son of Man’ was an important hope for God’s victory.
Daniel had seen a vision of a victorious “son of man” (Daniel 7:13-14).
The Jews understood this as the promised serpent killer, offspring of Eve.
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
But if this son of man overcomes the serpent, why does Jesus say he will die?
The answer is because it is by humbly dying that He overcomes!
Jesus doesn’t just predict His death, He predicts His victory by resurrection!
Jesus does not win by becoming a greater monster than the serpent.
Jesus becomes a God-like human, full of humble love, grace and goodness.
Far from being weak, THIS is the Jesus Way for overcoming evil.
God beats evil with love, not with force or might or power.
Jesus is predicting the victory of love over hate, life over death!
Lord Jesus, to believe in You is to believe in the victory of goodness and love over evil. Help me not just to say I believe it, but to join You in overcoming evil with goodness and love!
