‘Like God’ in the world?

Posted on April 14, 2024April 13, 2024 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 82

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.” (Psalm 82:6)
The psalmist is quoting what God says in the courtroom (v.1).
Go judges them for their cruelty and injustice (vv.2-4).
Though created as God’s image-bearers, they don’t act like God.
We were made to rule creation as God’s representatives (Genesis 1:26-28).
In this way we are like ‘gods’, showing the world what God is like.
Not equal to God in essence, but equal to God in our creation role.
But what if God’s image-bearers do un-God-like things?
This is how God’s kingdom of light has become a dominion of darkness.
In Jesus a perfect ‘son of the Most High’ has come.
He refused Satan’s lies, lived like God and reclaimed Adam’s throne.
A God-like human is in charge and is raising up other God-like humans.
In Jesus we are God’s sons and daughters, but do we live like it?
It sounds wrong, but in the sense of Psalm 82, we are ‘gods’ in the world.
How do we use our God-like position and authority, in good or bad ways?
PRAYER
Lord, it is human failure, not God’s, that ruins our world. Help me to defend justice, the weak and fatherless, the poor and oppressed, the weak and the needy… like you!

A lot of people think they are ‘somebody’! They think they are great, powerful, popular, almost almighty like ‘gods’. But really they are nothing like the Psalmist says: “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.” I’m thankful that my Heavenly Father cares enough for about me – to knock me down when I start to get prideful and arrogant – thinking I am somebody. What I am is a child of God – by grace through Jesus! I know my place but at times I need a reminding. For that I give thanks. Lord help me to stay humble and walking in your grace! It is then that I can be a better steward of everything!

    Which side are you on?
Do you walk in your own light or the light shine of Jesus? Do I insist on my own way or His way? Am I walking around in my darkness trying to find my way when there is a Way shown to all who believe that this is God’s world and in that power we are able to be His servants doing His will overcoming the evils of this world doing His will – being an instrument not of destruction, but an instrument of His peace. Have Thine own Way Lord. Use even me Your purpose to fulfill – doing Your will and not my selfish desires.

1 Have thine own way, Lord!
    Have thine own way!
    Thou art the potter,
    I am the clay.
    Mold me and make me
    after thy will,
    while I am waiting,
    yielded and still.
2 Have thine own way, Lord!
    Have thine own way!
    Search me and try me,
    Savior today!
    Wash me just now, Lord,
    wash me just now,
    as in thy presence
    humbly I bow.
3 Have thine own way, Lord!
    Have thine own way!
    Wounded and weary,
    help me I pray!
    Power, all power,
    surely is thine!
    Touch me and heal me,
    Savior divine!
4 Have thine own way, Lord!
    Have thine own way!
    Hold o’er my being
    absolute sway.
    Fill with thy Spirit
    till all shall see
    Christ only, always,
    living in me!
