A blind man who sees!

Posted on November 29, 2015November 28, 2015 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:46-52 “‘Go,’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’” (Mark 10:52) Desperate hope that will not let go. The disciples with Jesus rebuke him and shoo him away. But this blind man sees something in Jesus that ignites his hope. ‘Son of David’ was another way of saying God’s promised messiah. While…

Upside down kingdom?

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:35-45 “Whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” (Mark 10:44) Jesus seems to be backwards in all He says and does. In a time of disposable marriage, He advocated lifelong faithfulness. Where children and disabled were disregarded, He valued and blessed them. Where wealth and power were sought, He pressed…

A light at the end of the tunnel!

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:32-34 “Three days later he will rise.” (Mark 10:34) Jesus uses prophetic language to describe Himself: the Son of Man. For the disciples, the Son of Man was the coming king (Daniel 7:13-14). But did they understand from Isaiah 53 that He would suffer and die. Did they understand that He would come back…

Why is it so hard?

Posted on November 26, 2015November 25, 2015 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:23-31 “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” (Mark 10:23) Not only is it hard, according to Jesus, it is impossible. I would consider myself rich in this world. These words speak to me, and I need to dig into what they mean for me. Do…

Tough love

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:17-22 “Jesus looked at him and loved him… Go, sell everything you have…” (Mark 10:21) Is this is how Jesus treats people He loves?! Jesus did not say this to everyone, but He did say it to this man, whom He loved. As I’ve said before, Jesus personalizes His responses to the…

Survey: Daily prayer and bible reading?

Posted on November 24, 2015November 25, 2015 by Norm

This past Sunday I surveyed our congregation about their daily prayer and bible reading. Forty people responded: — 19 said YES/YES — 16 said NO/YES — 5 said NO/NO These results are both encouraging, and an encouragement to find ways to help those who feel it is important but are not doing it yet. As…

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:13-16 “The kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Mark 10:14) Children have often been disregarded or discarded, used or abused in history. They are weak, dependent and victims of whatever is passed on to them. God’s heart breaks for such as these, and Jesus reveals God’s love for them. Creation…

Divorce always causes pain

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 10:1-12 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law.” (Mark 10:5) Making a commitment to someone, and sticking to it, can be hard. But a marriage vow, freely made, should be honoured and maintained. There are times when that is difficult, if your partner does not keep…

Taking sin seriously!

Posted on November 22, 2015November 21, 2015 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 9:42-50 “And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out.” (Mark 9:47) Jesus is talking about the seriousness of sin. His words seem extreme – pluck it out, cut it off – but that is the point. Sin, like cancer, requires severe treatment – amputation, chemo or radiation. Jesus describes…

Bridges, not barriers!

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 9:38-41 “Whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mark 9:40) As we follow Jesus, we have more allies than we realize. A person does not have to be “one of us” to be an ally. There are many ‘denominations’ of Christians, yet we are one in Christ. And even non-Christians can…

think about it!

People seek methods of learning to know God. Is it not much shorter and more direct to simply do everything for the love of Him? There is no finesse about it. One only has to do it generously and simply.
