Even the stars and the stones!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 2:1-12

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2)
This story reminds me that God’s revelation is not limited to Israel.
The Magi (Median-Persian astrologers) studied and believed in messages from the stars.
How and when and where they appeared in the sky contained messages from the gods.
They did not believe in the God of Israel, but they did believe the stars.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” (Psalm 19:1,4)

Apparently God speaks to people through their different religious beliefs too.
Ironically, while these ‘unbelievers’ want to worship Jesus, the chosen people do not.
Herod says that he does (v.8), but this is so that he can kill him, not worship him.
Not even the consulted religious leaders bother to join the Magi to find this king.
It seems that the people God chose to reveal himself through are not cooperating.
But their failure does not silence God; if they do not testify, then God will find others.
“‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if (my followers) keep quiet, the stones will cry out.'” (Luke 19:40)
If the stars and the stones declare the glory of God in Jesus, will we worship him!
PRAYER
Lord, you are speaking into the world, and ALL people (not just Christians) can hear you. I want to join the stars and the stones, and to worship you with ALL people (not just Christians).

  1. I find it interesting that right away King Herod makes the connection that the newly born king of the Jews might be the Messiah. They were expecting a Messiah and Herod says that he wants to go and worship him also: “report to me, so that I too may go and worship him”. We are expecting Jesus to return and he could take me home or come suddenly. But instead of preparing to worship – let me worship Him now! Help me to live for Him!

  2. In the stars His handiwork was seen. Even the scholars, teachers of the law, knew the scriptures that He was to be born in Bethlehem. Yet only the wise men went on to Bethlehem and not the priests nor the teachers of the law. Knowing and not doing. To know means also to do. It is more than head but also the heart. I too need to be like the wise men and see and hear what the Lord God is telling me how to serve Him each day. Emmanuel – God with us – with me.

In the stars His handiwork I see
On the winds, He speaks of majesty
Though He ruleth over land and sea
    What is that to me
    I will celebrate nativity
For it has its place in history
Sure He came to set His people free
    What is that to me

Till one day I met Him face to face
And I sought the wonder of His grace
Then I knew that He was more than
Just a God who didn’t care
That lived away up there, and
Now He walks beside me day by day
Ever watching o’er me lest I stray
Helping me to find that narrow way
    He’s everything to me
