Our theologies don’t add up!

Posted on October 16, 2021October 15, 2021 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Proverbs 27-28

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

““Three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand” (Proverbs 30:18)
What strikes me is how constantly Agur (30:1) repeats his lack of understanding.
His lists of two, three and four things also hint at how his thoughts don’t add up.
His opening words reflect the humility of Job when he faced God (Job 38-40).
“I spoke once, but I have no answer — twice, but I will say no more.” (Job 40:5)
It seems to me that we are always declaring what we know, then realizing maybe we didn’t.
Each generation declares ‘this is what the Lord says’, but say different things.
In our day as well there are new things being said, just as in the past.
“Every word of God is flawless” (30:5), but not every word that we speak.
“Do not add to his words…” (30:6), yet all our interpretations do this.
Whenever we attempt to explain or teach the bible, we use our own words.
This is unavoidable, but we need to remember that our theologies don’t add up.
We need a spirit of humility, a recognition that we only “know in part” (1 Corinthians 13:9).
Our comfort is not that our wisdom or theology is a shield, because it is a flawed shield.
The Lord Jesus “is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” (30:5) – my confidence is in him!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, too often we are posturing ourselves to show that we are right. Give us the humble spirit of Agur to admit the limitations of our wisdom and understanding.

“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction…Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.”
Lord may my contentment always be rooted in you – that I may lean on your wisdom – that your spirit guides me – gives me revelation that I may live my life walking in your footsteps more nearly every day – trusting fully in your council. That my will may be shaped into yours!

Another spot on reflection. I get so tired of hearing/reading, “The Lord told me ….” I wonder how much of this comes from our own opinions or biases.

Trust in The Lord. Be safe.
    Saved by His grace.
Seek the Lord. Take refuge in Him.
He is my Shield and Refuge.
    My trust is in Him.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

think about it!

Surely there is something in the unruffled calm of nature that overawes our little anxieties and doubts; the sight of the deep-blue sky and the clustering stars above seems to impart a quiet to the mind.
