The mystery and wonder of Jesus

Posted on October 4, 2021September 12, 2021 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: John 1:1-5

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
John starts his story on the life of Jesus in a very unique way.
He has been thinking long and hard about who Jesus is.
Jesus was no ordinary prophet or teacher, he was … unique!
He was fully human – he ate, drank, slept and suffered like any human.
And yet he was more – there was something very close to God in him.
He was WITH God: he had a very intimate relationship with God as his Father.
He lived LIKE God: he reflected God’s wisdom, justice, mercy, love and grace.
He spoke FOR God: his words had the ring of divine authority in them.
Everything about Jesus expressed a deep oneness WITH God – as if he was ‘God with us’.
It was as if the Word of God (God’s way of relating to people) became human.
Not just expressed as a word, but expressed in human flesh – God in a body!
John can’t explain Jesus any other way than this: he was with God, he was God!
Or as Paul put it, he was the fullness of God in human form (Colossians 2:9).
These words may sound mysterious, but they are the best way to describe Jesus.
PRAYER
Lord, I feel a sense of mystery when I think what you must have been like. I look forward to meeting you, and feeling the same mystery and wonder that John tries to express in words here.

Lord help us remember the privilege it is to call you our brother and friend, thank you for “dressing down” for our sake, when you are one with God. Help us remember to be like you!

Thinking how appropriate that Jesus is framed as ‘the word’ – I mean he is our best connection with God! Through Jesus we communicate – God listens to our prayers because of Jesus. And through Jesus we receive the HS – as the HS nudges us each day and along the way. Lord Jesus you are God – yet the Father and Spirit are distinct – I don’t totally understand it but I’m comfortable trusting because you’re the Word – I can pray and I know you listen and care for me – its evident though sometimes I don’t act it. Sorry! Thank you for connecting with me in your own unique way – through scripture, thoughts, events, other persons – thank you for not giving up on me!

    God’s Word.
    He spoke and it was.
    Creation.
    All is His.
    Ever present.
Lighting the Way for all to live. Light shine.
Follow that Light. Follow that ‘star’.
    Be a wise man.

    Jesus, light of the world
Shine through the darkness, bright as the day
    Jesus, light of the world
Shine in our hearts, show us the way tonight

think about it!

We should seek to become reservoirs rather than canals. For a canal just allows the water to flow through it, but a reservoir waits until it is filled before overflowing, then it can communicate without loss to itself. In the church today, we have many canals but few reservoirs.
