Please help me guard my heart!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Proverbs 3-4

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
For the Jews, the heart was a person’s spiritual command center.
Our heart directs our mind, will and emotions, and then our words and actions.
When something has our heart, everything about us moves towards it.
What happens if our hearts are gripped by something bad or unhealthy?
Like sex, money, pleasure, gambling or shopping?
Like work, or success, or food, or physical fitness.
Everything we do will flow from that passion, it will consume us.
Wisdom is to think very carefully about what we love, and think, and do.
The careless heart will be seized by lesser loves, and enslaved by them.
Through these Proverbs, Jesus is warning us to be on guard.
He urges us to become passionate about love and faithfulness (3:3).
He calls us to trust in him, and set our hearts on his way (3:5-6).
Is there something that has my heart that is hindering or hurting me?
Am I making wise choices, or am I allowing unhealthy loves ruin my life?
PRAYER
Lord, I’ve seen what happens when I give my heart to lesser things. If I am to be a slave to anything, I’d rather be a slave to you. Take my heart, and help me guard it!

  1. Stay on the right path – connect to the source of all wisdom: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” How often I deviate and lean on my own understanding – yet the Lord has been faithful to re-direct me – “the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” HS continue working in me – connect me to wisdom itself – my heavenly Father – through Jesus the son – my brother!

  2. Listen.
    Listen to His voice.
    His words are my lifeline.
His direction must be my journey in joy if I but walk in His SonShine.
Jesus Saviour pilot me so that I stay true to You in all I do.
    You are my lifeline.
Guard my feet that I always walk in Your SonShine.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
