A sincere, open heart?

Posted on September 21, 2020September 20, 2020 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Mark 8:11-13

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign?” (Mark 8:12)
Jesus is not offended by wounded, weary, needy people who struggle with doubt.
He knows some people struggle with faith, and may test Him to make sure.
But He sighs deeply and will not accommodate those who want to undermine Him.
The religious leaders tested Jesus to see Him fail; they were jealous and prideful.
Jesus refuses to play games with those who do not genuinely desire the truth.
As a Jesus follower, I can feel safe coming to Jesus with my questions and doubts.
Jesus does not sigh deeply or refuse our questions if they are sincere.
He may not always give us the ‘proof’ we ask for, but He will answer us somehow.
My motivation is not to disprove Jesus — I really want to believe!
In today’s reading I am encouraged to come sincerely and honestly to Jesus.
I am also reminded that not everyone WANTS to believe when they ask about Jesus.
I’ve been questioned by those who just want to prove God and Jesus are a scam.
Don’t argue or debate; show them the truth in your gracious actions…
And pray for the Spirit to soften their hearts to become sincere and honest.
PRAYER
Lord, there is nothing wrong with asking questions or having doubts, so long as they come from an open heart. Lord I believe, help me with my unbelief!

The people asking for a sign must of been a ‘slap’ in the face for Jesus. They saw Jesus but they still asked him for further proof. Do I do the same when I ask for Jesus for a special intervention? Where is my faith? Will I believe because of the sign – the miracle – the answer to prayer. I must have faith in Jesus first – forgive me Lord when I get the order wrong! Don’t turn away from me – I want to trust you more and more each day because of who you are – I know you will do what’s best for me!

God had shown His presence by signs throughout history. And now the religious leaders wanted a sign? They were to be in the know. They were more interested in the sign than the word of God. The Lord has told us that He is with us – Emmanuel. I just need to have an open heart and open eyes to see His presence every day. God is the answer. Trust Him and live for Him. He is the All in all. Walk with Him daily.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will, he abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

think about it!

One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organizations do not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team. The first requisite is life, always.
