I’m likely in error too!

Posted on April 21, 2020April 20, 2020 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 22:23-33

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29)
This question asked by the Sadducees is a legitimate one, based on the Law of Moses.
Technically, this is how Levirate marriage worked (Deuteronomy 25:5-6).
But Jesus challenges how they read scripture, like a technical rule book.
The scriptures speak to life in this fallen world; they’re not the final vision.
They are limited and time-bound attempts to point us to the new creation.
We also sometimes read the bible too technically, too literally.
In Jesus’s parables, the kingdom of God is something like… and yet so much more.
“No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
As Jesus followers we need to read the words of scripture with humility and hope.
They point us in the right direction, but they do not give us detailed definitions.
We will have differences of interpretation (history and experience prove we do!).
We need to hold our ‘doctrines’ and ‘definitions’ lightly, with humility.
We need to teach and practice it with humility too; we’re likely wrong somehow.
The truth is so much more than our feeble attempts to understand and explain it.
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me to thinking and teaching as if ‘I know the truth’ and ‘my interpretation is right’. Help me to think and teach with humility and grace, always open to learning and rethinking (repenting).

I find the position of the Sadducee’s and Atheists today totally hopeless – without a future. Similar to simply believing that Jesus was ordinary – who lived and died and nothing more. In the face of that is that Jesus is alive and is risen! Because He lives – I live now and beyond in the expectation of the resurrection! Jesus pointed to truth expressed through the words and testimony of God to Abraham, the patriarchs, to Moses – and confirmed it completely through his resurrection!

V 33 “When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.” Lord Jesus as your follower help with your Spirit dwelling in me not only to be astonished at your teaching but be wholeheartedly willing and ready to follow and obey and learn more each day how to live as you lived here on earth giving glory to the Father.

The religious leaders were limited with their vision seeing only what they wanted to see. I too am limited with my vision seeing only what I desire to see or by what I have been taught. But as I continue to read His Word lead by His Spirit God continues to open my eyes and gives new visions on how I should live in His presence. I must not focus/see only what I think is a possibility but also see with the eyes of faith for I today see through a glass darkly. I need to be SpiritLead as I live for Jesus this day and every day.
