When God seems far away!

Posted on March 1, 2020February 29, 2020 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 22

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?” (Psalms 22:1)
When is the last time you felt like this, ignored by God in your anguish?
What I love about the psalms are their inspired honesty.
He accuses God of ignoring him, which is not actually true (an inspired error)?
This is how David feels, and God welcomes this brutal honesty.
I am encouraged that God inspires David to express his heart as it is.
Even more, God empties Himself and becomes human and joins David in his anguish.
These opening words are what Jesus – God with us – cried out from the cross.
Jesus knows our weakness and struggle, and understands our anguish and pain.
As Jesus followers we cling to God by desperate faith, even when God seems far away.
We see the path that Jesus followed, and trust that this path leads to God.
But as we go we can be honest with God about our doubt or struggle; He can take it.
Be assured, when God seems far away, He is closer than you think.
Jesus shows us that God is present with us in our anguish, and will lead us through it.
When our grip weakens, His grip tightens.
PRAYER
Lord, right now it is easy for me to say this, because I am not in anguish. Should that time come, hang on to me even if my grip on You gets weak.

I couldn’t help but think if Jesus – in his prayers before the crucifixion and during it. The abandonment He felt – when evil prevailed and he died for me – but like in the Psalm – there is hope – there is victory. Lord help me always to meet the challenge and see the victory – not giving in – but looking up.

think about it!

In the practice of the presence of God we call Our Father to mind at every possible moment. At every opportunity, we focus our attention on Him and silently say, “Thank You, Father” throughout each day.
