Who are you a disciple of?

Posted on July 17, 2026July 11, 2026 by Norm
Reflecting on John 9:13-34

“You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!” (John 9:28)

These religious leaders set up a contrast between Jesus and Moses.
For them, Moses is the key to God’s truth, and Jesus has to measure up to Him.
If there is a disagreement between what Moses says and Jesus, Moses wins.
They are students of Moses, and refuse to be students of Jesus.
In some ways I still see this happening today.

In place of Moses, we have substituted the Bible.
The whole Bible, including Moses, David, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, is the key.
Jesus is read in light of all of these, and His teaching is made to fit with them.
If there is a disagreement between them, then Jesus’s teaching is made to fit.
We are disciples of the Bible, but then are we disciples of Jesus?

I am a Jesus follower, not a Bible follower.
When I find a disagreement between Jesus and Moses, or Paul, I submit to Jesus.
Moses wrote in shadows, and Paul only knew in part; Jesus is God’s Word in the flesh.
I sense the church today is more about Moses and Paul than Jesus.
Jesus, not Moses and Paul, are the key to God’s truth: be a student of Jesus!

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Moses and Paul are not opposed to You, but neither are they equal to You. They also gladly submit their views to Yours. Help me to do the same.

As we saw, Jesus was the answerto the thief on the cross. Even today we put stumblling blocks instead of stepping stones to Jesus. I need to put my faith into action. Faith is verb and need to be seen by what I do. Others need to see Jesus living in me. I need to be like Christ unto others.

think about it!

We shall never learn to know ourselves except by endeavoring to know God; for, beholding His greatness, we realize our own littleness; His purity shows us our foulness; and by meditating upon His humility we find how very far we are from being humble.
