Reflecting on John 5:16-30
“For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.” (John 5:20)
Jesus claims to do only what He sees the Father doing.
But how can He see what the Father is doing, if God is invisible?
Can we see what the Father is doing too?
Jesus can look at creation itself, and uses it often in His teaching.
Jesus can reflect on the stories in Scripture, and does refer to them.
But here Jesus says that the Father is somehow showing Him, because He loves Him.
In their close, personal relationship, Jesus sees new things.
God opens Jesus’s eyes as He reflects on the world, and on scripture.
What we see Jesus doing is what He sees the Father doing.
Jesus becomes a new way of showing us what the Father is and does.
God loves us, and shows us all He does… through Jesus.
We see His compassion, grace, patience, love, faithfulness, forgiveness.
We see His self-sacrificing, enemy-blessing goodness overflowing in Jesus.
Because God loves us, He has shown us what He is doing, SO THAT WE CAN DO IT TOO.
More than anything, we should focus on what Jesus is doing… for this is God’s way!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I want to only do what I see You doing, because You only did what the Father does. Creation and scripture are not enough; give me eyes to see You, and the Spirit strength to do what You did!
