To be wise and faithful!?

Posted on February 10, 2026February 10, 2026 by Norm
Reflecting on Luke 12:35-48

“Who then is the faithful and wise manager?” (Luke 12:42)

Slavery was common, and so Jesus uses this analogy for His followers.
It is a limited analogy, for we are more than slaves, we are friends (John 15:15).
Slaves have assigned tasks; the wise and faithful ones do their jobs.
Like slaves (but not actually slaves), we’ve been assigned a job.
We are put in charge of each other, to provide for each others needs (v.42).

We are responsible for making sure our neighbour is fed, clothed, protected.
The well-being of everyone in God’s creation family is our responsibility.
Is this what we see happening in the world around us?
Is this what we see happening in the churches around us?
Jesus warns about slaves who only take care of themselves, and who harm others.

This is the opposite of being faithful and wise (no matter what we know or believe).
Christians and churches especially should heed this warning of Jesus.
If we want to be faithful and wise Jesus followers, take care of your neighbours!
Jesus has shown us what servant love looks like, and expects this from us.
This is how Jesus defines faithfulness and wisdom – not creeds and confessions.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we focus so much on being right that we fail to do right. Again and again You remind us that what matters is how we treat others. Help me to grow in this kind of wisdom and faithfulness.

I am not my own but belong to my Lord and Saviour. To be like Jesus means to serve Him. I need to model my actions to His will so that my words and deeds are in sync with His will. Creeds and confessions outline beliefs but actions of love express what I believe – love in action. Makemea servant Lord also this day.

think about it!

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
