are you growing the kingdom?

Posted on July 3, 2008 by Norman Sennema

Special thanks to Jill Hamming from PEI who is writing the devotionals on the readings from Luke (with help from L.E.Porter’s commentary on Luke).

SCRIPTURE: Luke 13:18-21

OBSERVATION/APPLICATION

  1. A small amount of yeast leavens several cups of flour. A tiny seed eventually grows into a tree that can even give shelter to birds. Little things can have a big effect.
  2. Jesus is comparing this to the growth of God’s Kingdom. What is He saying? First one grain of truth hits our heart and we begin to grow in our relationship with God. Gradually we learn more and become stronger in our faith and can have a good effect on those around us.
  3. Or He could be saying that first one person chooses to follow Jesus. They tell others and they tell others and after a time there is a group of followers. One person chooses to love another person no matter what, others follow the example and you have a group of loving people.
  4. These parables can also be a reminder of the opposite. Just as a truth grows a good thing so a lie or angry word can grow a bad thing. A little bitterness, unrepented, can spread to make a nasty person and/or unhappy group of people. Three little words; I love you or the other three little words, I hate you. Which way are we growing?

PRAYER:
Lord Jesus we want to help grow Your Kingdom. Teach us to keep choosing what is right, putting others first, wanting to share You. Show us when we are spreading unhealthy attitudes and ideas so that we can repent. Thank-you, Amen.

think about it!

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen. Not only because I see it, but because I see everything by it.
