Reflecting on Luke 14:1-6
“Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’ But they remained silent.” (Luke 14:3-4)
Jesus is in the home of a prominent (important) religious leader.
The religious experts are all watching Jesus and the prominent leader carefully.
Notice how quiet they are, which is very unusual for them.
The rest of this section is about seeking honour and blessing.
Who is this man with an abnormal swelling?
I suspect he is someone loved by the leader, almost like hos own child.
“If one of you has a child…”, would you help them on the Sabbath?
These religious leaders are being careful not to offend their host.
Are they quiet because they do not want to lose his favour?
Jesus is not trying to impress anyone; He is motivated by God’s love!
The whole point of the Sabbath Law was to bless God’s children.
If that means healing, helping, doing good for someone, by all means do it!
The whole point of the Law is to love God AND people; this is what the Law hangs on.
These religious experts were NOT motived by love… am I ?
Am I an expert in the Bible, or an expert in the church… or an expert in love?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I do not want to be an expert bible reader or an expert church member. I want to be an expert in love. Help me to seek this more than my own honour, blessing position or reputation!

Love, love, love, love,
The Gospel in a Word is Love,
Love your neighbour as yourself,
Love, love, love.
As I live for Jesus, others must see His love through me, trying each day to be an instrument of His peace.
