Listen to Jesus!

Posted on April 9, 2024April 9, 2024 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Luke 9:28-36

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“Three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (Luke 9:33)
The actual words Peter uses is ‘tabernacles’ (tents).
This makes sense to the religious mind: you need to honour holy men.
Peter’s mistake is that he is equating Jesus with these other men.
“This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” (Luke 9:35)
Jesus is not just another good or holy man; he is set apart.
God sends the messengers before Jesus, but they are only messengers.
Jesus, not Moses or Elijah, nor Peter or Paul, is to be our focus.
He alone is God’s Son, the perfect representation of the father.
We can learn from the others, but we are to listen to Jesus.
We do not need churches dedicated to Peter or Paul, Moses or David.
We need churches dedicated to Jesus, though not just in name only.
To rightly honor Jesus, we need listening Jesus followers, not buildings.
This is why I focus mostly on the Gospels, and not the other parts.
I want to know Jesus, I want to honor him by listening to him.
PRAYER
Lord, help me to stay focused on you and to listen to you. Help me to point to you, and not be a messenger that steals the spotlight.

“They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.” Seems to me like this was a bit of a ‘pitstop’ – a time for Jesus to get refueled and ready for the last leg of his earthly mission. Moses and Elijah were there to encourage and affirm Jesus’ mission and then in closing God again announces: “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” Jesus is special part of God but also separate – much like me – God created me in His image but Jesus is the image of God- I don’t understand how it works but what I do know is that it’s special and I am well connected. Lord help me to listen to you each day as I do and as I make plans!

We are told in this passage to listen to Jesus. He is the Way. the Truth and the Light. As His disciples followed Jesus and listened to Him so must I – follow Him. Others may proclaim Jesus, and that is good – sharing the message. However it is only Jesus Who is our/my Saviour. Only His Way can save me. I need to daily walk in His Light, dressed in the gospel of peace. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord God. All for Jesus.

    Jesus, all for Jesus
    All I am and have
    And ever hope to be
    Jesus, all for Jesus
    All I am and have
    And ever hope to be
All of my ambitions, hopes and plans
    I surrender these
    Into your hands
All of my ambitions, hopes and plans
    I surrender these
    Into your hands
    For its only in
Your will that I am free
    For its only in
Your will that I am free
    Jesus, all for Jesus
    All I am and have
    And ever hope to be
