What makes God angry?

Posted on March 3, 2024March 2, 2024 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 76

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“To save all the afflicted of the land.” (Psalms 76:9)
Many people see God as angry, and Jesus saves us from God’s anger.
I believe this picture of an angry God is a false image.
I do believe God gets angry… but what makes God angry?
Isn’t anger a good response when a someone is being raped?
When the people are starving while the rulers feast?
How about a priest that sacrifices humans to appease God?
Or when soldiers slaughter defenceless innocents with abandon?
God is angry at sin – unloving, heartless and cruel behaviour.
God is angry at those who do this without love, without care.
God’s anger is roused to save the afflicted from the wolves.
For God so loved the world that he came to save the afflicted.
Jesus doesn’t save us from God’s wrath, but from sin.
God is angry at injustice, cruelty, selfishness, abuse… am I?
Am I more like the wolf or the lamb; do I want to be more like Jesus?
PRAYER
Lord, thank you for your angry love. Help me to be angry at unloving behaviour, and to join you in saving the afflicted too.

Don’t take the power of God for granted: “From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the land feared and was quiet—9 when you, God, rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the land.” God hand is more than strong enough to save but it is also effective to judge and punish. We may fear the enemy but if God is our God and we trust Him our fear is founded on a powerful God who is might to save! Lord forgive me for putting my trust elsewhere – taking you for granted. It is a grievous sin. Why am I still anxious at times??

Do not put your trust in the horse or the chariot, but in the Lord. He alone can save. Praise Him. Bring your gifts to Him for this is God’s world. He is in charge. He reigns. It is He Who can bring peace to the land. It is He Who saves. Worship Him. Serve Him. Be an instrument of His peace.

Our God is an awesome God
    He reigns from Heaven above
    With wisdom, power, and love

If a man cannot be a Christian in the place he is, he cannot be a Christian anywhere.
