My assigned task… and yours!

Posted on November 16, 2023November 15, 2023 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Mark 13:32-37

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“He leaves his servants in charge, each with their assigned task.” (Mark 13:34)
This line made me wonder: what is my assigned task?
As a Jesus follower I do believe the Lord has assigned a task to each of us.
We are in the time of waiting, not sure when he will come back.
But we do know that in the meantime, he has work for us to do.
One thought that the Lord has laid on my heart are these words of Paul:
“My only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” (Acts 20:24)
Whatever job I am doing in the moment, my main task is testifying to God’s grace.
Through my work, my relationships, my stewardship of resources – testify to grace.
Rely on grace; remember that I am accepted by grace, not because I’m so good.
Be gracious; treat others as Jesus treats me, be patient, kind, helpful, encouraging.
Jesus has left us – and me – in charge of the world, to continue in his grace mission.
Is this the job that I am doing, will he find me fulfilling my assigned task?
I am here for such a time as this; may the Lord find me doing my job when he comes!
PRAYER
Lord, plant this thought deep into my heart and mind: I am an agent of grace. Help me to find specific ways to fulfill this task as I go through my day.

I do not know when my time will come and Jesus will call me home. Jesus alerts us to be busy in his kingdom work – not to coast and take it easy i.e., the parable of the rich man with the abundant crops or the parable of the servants entrusted with ‘talents’. Jesus said: “If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.” Even in retirement there is always something to do to engage us – to be active in sharing Jesus’ way to others. By reaching out – even in small ways! To make a difference for Jesus’ sake!

    Created to serve.
My living for Jesus is my God given task. That is my work. Nothing can turn me aside from that. This day is the Lord’s day as is every day and so I do what the Lord wants me to do. That is how I watch – doing His will. Prayerfully I live this day in His presence as He continues to guide me, strengthen me as I live for Jesus.
The story, don’t remember where it was from, but the question was raised to Luther as to what he would be doing if he knew the hour of the Lord’s return. His answer was that he would be working in His garden.

    1
This is the day, this is the day.
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice,
And be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day
    That the Lord has made.
    2
We are the sons, we are the sons,
Of the living God, of the living God.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice,
And be glad in Him, and be glad in Him.
We are the sons of the living God.
We will rejoice and be glad in Him.
We are the sons, we are the sons
    Of the living God.

think about it!

There are those who seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge; That is curiosity. There are those who seek knowledge to be known by others; That is vanity. There are those who seek knowledge in order to serve; That is love.

— Bernard of Clairvaux
