Feb 18 — Joshua 13:15-33

Posted on February 17, 2008May 10, 2021 by Norm

SCRIPTURE: Joshua 13:15-33

OBSERVATION:
The passage continues to describe who inherited what. And again we are reminded that the Levites did not inherit any land (Numbers 18:23-24). They were a set part people among the set apart nation, to remind them that they all belonged to God because He rescued them from judgment (see Numbers 3:11-13). Their special assignment was to help the priests in the tabernacle service (Numbers 8:19). They were assigned towns to live in, among the other tribes (Numbers 35:2-8). But they were landless; God was their inheritance! After Jesus comes, we are like the landless levites, strangers in this world whose inheritance is God, among the nations as a living reminder of the presence and power and purpose of God. We have a mission, and our concerns should not be first of all acquiring land and possessions, but on using whatever we do have for the Lord.

APPLICATION:
I have a house, I have a car, I have a computer, I have books. I have a plenty of money, as well as abilities and education. All of these are resources that the Lord has entrusted to me. But they are not my inheritance. My inheritance is life in/with God through Jesus, and their Spirit living in me. All of my resources are entrusted to me for my task, to be a living reminder to those around me of the ultimate, spiritual realities that we live in, yet are usually blind to. I (we) represent God in this world, the extension of the body of Jesus (Who is God in the flesh, in a body). I can grumble and complain about how much stuff others have, but that will only reveal my spiritual blindness. How rich are they really? How poor am I really (James 1:9-11, Revelation 3:17-18)? They may have many temporal blessings, but I have every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).

PRAYER:
Lord, forgive me for envying the “rich”, most of whom are really poor. Help me to appreciate the wealth and wonder of my inheritance in You. And help me to see that this is just the beginning! Amen.

This passage describes the inheritance received from the Lord. Each tribe received a specific area, but the tribe of Levi received none. Everything that each tribe received was a gift from the Lord. God had given the land as their possession, as His people. To be God’s people meant to be living in His presence in the land He had given to them – their inheritance. Joy is living before the face of the Lord God.

God’s priests, the Levites did not receive land because their needs were to be met in total commitment to the Lord and God’s people would supply their physical needs freely. Joy is serving the Lord and He would provide for all their needs via the people. Wow!

My challange is to live for joy in the presence of the Lord. All that I have is His. I am blessed. How do I use my possession in His service from day to day?

    Jesus, all for Jesus,
All I am and have and ever hope to be.
    Jesus, all for Jesus,
All I am and have and ever hope to be.

All of my ambitions, hopes and plans
I surrender these into Your hands.
All of my ambitions, hopes and plans
I surrender these into Your hands.

For it’s only in Your will that I am free,
For it’s only in Your will that I am free,
    Jesus, all for Jesus,
All I am and have and ever hope to be.
