May 4 — 1 Peter 2:13-25

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 2:13-25

OBSERVATION:
Continuing his theme of how to live in this world as citizens of a hevanely kingdom, Peter urges believers to live in humble submission and service to others, including our leaders, masters. This is not a vindication of oppressive and unjust leaders, but a pattern for Christ-like living in a godless world (1 Peter 2:21f). This is the behaviour that will make others stop and take notice (2:12).
We are free, but that does not allow us to be rebellious. Christ-followers ought to be known for respectable attitudes and bahaviours, doing what is right no matter what, and entrusting oneself to God for mercy and help.
Not only is our salvation earned by Christ’s humble response, that salvation is spread through that same behaviour. Jesus has modeled for us what a redemptive life looks like. This is how we need to live to spread the message of God’s grace!

APPLICATION:
What does this pattern say to me today? What about to those who live in unjust countries, are employed by unjust employers, or whose nation is oppressed by another? Would Jesus’ pattern of humble submission apply to those whose nation was invaded by the Nazis?
Christians have developed a reputation for arrogance, boastfulness – not that all of them are, but the bad ones shape the reputation for the rest. History supports this reputation, unfortuneately. Properly, Christ-followers ought to be known as the best, most respectful workers.
I need to spend more time thinking about what this means for me, about how I need to submit to those in authority over me. Does my attitude towards the government (or to police) reflect this lack of respect?

PRAYER:
Lord, show me where I have a rebellious spirit, and help me to be more humble. Grant me the strength to not retaliate with words or actions, but to entrust my status to Your care, and meanwhile to be as gracious and genernous to others, including my “enemies”. Amen.

think about it!

Imagination was given to man to compensate for what he is not, and a sense of humor to console him for what he is.
