How much does it cost to follow Jesus?

Often when we hear about the “good news”, we hear about God’s love as free, no strings attached? And yet what about the high cost of following Jesus. In his book “The Cost Of Discipleship”, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (a Pastor who died in a Nazi concentration camp for opposing Hitler) distinguishes between costly grace and cheap grace. He states, it is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. So what do you think? How much does it cost to follow Jesus?

  1. Speaking from my personal expertise, 1st develop the muscle mass, then shed the fat.
I found it a lot less complicated to lose the accumulated body
fat from a one particular month bulking cycle later on.

  4. Isaac Watts wrote this hymn, and the second verse (flowery beds of ease) really challenges me:

Am I a soldier of the cross,
    A follower of the Lamb,
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His Name?

Must I be carried to the skies
    On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize,
    And sailed through bloody seas?

  5. Thanks for being honest about the contradictory answer. I agree, it costs nothing yet it costs everything. My feeling is that the church has so stressed the “nothing” that so many people who call themselves Christians do so with very little sense of how it costs “everything”. We sing ‘Jesus, All For Jesus’, yet do we really mean it?

Forgiveness is 100% free, we can do nothing to earn it. But living the life of a forgiven sinner will cost me everything, it requires that I live out of love and gratitude and mercy for others, even sacrificing myself to help others find God’s forgiveness. It is this latter part of the “cost” of Christianity that has me asking myself, have I cheapened God’s grace by my half-hearted response to it?

Has my following Jesus not cost me enough?

  6. I struggle with this question becuase the more I learn the more I realize that the more I question the more I don’t know. However, this is the way I understand this question :
My answer is really contridictory to me: it costs nothing and yet it costs everything. Salvation is a free gift, from God We as sinners are justified by faith alone (as stated by Luther many times) and not by works in any way. However, if we don’t have the works then we are not honouring God’s free gift of salvation. So the gift of faith is free, but once we have recieved the free gift if can cost us much physically, emotionally, and spiritually….
