PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: 2 Kings 3-4
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.” (2 Kings 3:11).
For the nation of Israel, Elijah was one of the greatest prophets.
Here we see how Elisha followed in his master’s footsteps.
This phrase (to pour water on the hands) indicates that he was a servant of Elijah.
The stories in these chapters show Elisha continuing his master’s ministry.
As followers of Jesus, we see Jesus as the greatest and ultimate prophet.
While standing with Moses and Elijah, God declares Jesus as the one to be listened to.
Like Elisha was to Elijah, we are servants of our master.
And like Elisha we continue the ministry that Jesus began.
Jesus sends out his disciples in the power of the Spirit (John 20:20-21).
We are enabled to do what Jesus did, and even greater things (John 14:12).
But whatever we do, we do as those who pour out water on the hands of Jesus.
In other words, we are not our own masters, but we work for the only Master.
“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 1:1)
How am I continuing the work that Jesus began, and how is the Lord working through me?
PRAYER
Lord, I don’t know how I can do greater things than you did. But I do want to be a useful servant to you. Show me where and how you are sending me today.
Scarcity to remind us of what we have in Jesus. Each story reflects an impoverishment – water for troops, debts to be paid, no child, poisoned food, not enough bread – but in each case through God’s mercy there was enough. Scarcity serves to remind me that I have enough in Jesus. Looking to Jesus, he provides what I need – not necessarily what I want. Help me to see God’s hand even in the most difficult times! Help me to be a blessing to others!
The man of God had a great influence on those he met, and lived with. God’s presence was certainly felt.
I too am His servant. How do others feel His presence while I serve my Master as I live for Jesus every day. Do others see Christ Jesus in me?
Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord
And where there’s doubt, true faith in you.
Make me a channel of your peace
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there’s sadness, ever joy.
