PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Mark 14:17-26
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“That day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” (Mark 14:25)
Adam and Eve enjoyed the kingdom of God until they sinned and died.
Their selfishness turned the kingdom of God into the kingdom of darkness.
We have been sinning and dying ever since, with no hope of paradise.
Jesus is human like us, but unlike us he does not live selfishly.
He served God, loving God and people just like Adam and Eve were supposed to.
This is the covenant bond God desires for us, and why this world was created.
We were made to enjoy the fruit of the vine with God and each other in joy and love.
Our sin leads to suffering and death; it also led to Jesus’s suffering and death.
We deserve it, but he did not, and this is why his death changes everything.
Jesus beats sin and Satan, and lives the proper kingdom life for us.
Therefore death has no claim and him, and he will rise to see the kingdom.
Even though we still betray (let down) Jesus, he died on our behalf.
His gracious love has restored God’s kingdom dream, and we can look forward to it too.
One day we will drink the fruit of the vine with God and Jesus in the kingdom of God!
PRAYER
Lord, I let you down in so many ways. Thank you for not letting me down, but rather for lifting me up. I look forward to drinking with you in the kingdom of God.
Lord, I let you down in so many ways. Thank you for not letting me down, but rather for lifting me up. – This passage and prayer cause me to see God’s graciousness and mercy for His children, for me. Though God has given us His son and has forgiven us, yet we still sin, and “let Him down”. I am marvelled at how long, how deep and how wide God’s love is for us; that even when His own creation betrays Him, He is still merciful, welcoming us with open arms and still calling us His own and calling us to communion with Him at His table.
You are beautiful
You are beautiful beyond description
Too marvelous for words
Too wonderful for comprehension
Like nothing ever seen or heard
Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?
Who can fathom the depth of Your love?
You are beautiful beyond description
Majesty, enthroned above
And I stand, I stand in awe of You
I stand, I stand in awe of You
Holy God, to whom all praise is due
I stand in awe of You
The last cup of wine – the last drink that represented a new covenant in Jesus blood (life). His life the perfect offering that met the full requirements of redemption for many. I’m part of that ‘outpouring’ – Jesus did it for me! Why? I’m a sinner – that’s why – but now a forgiven sinner. Now I may look forward and work towards the day when Jesus calls me home or calls me to Him – and that I may join the next time He drinks again in the new era! Thanks be to God for his mercy and grace!
Lord thank you for forgiving me even though I was one of the ones that betray you. Thank you for dying for my sins and setting the example for my life. Help me forgive how you forgive.
Very cool note that singing hymns was a part of their evening, before heading up to the Mount of Olives for prayer.
Like the thief on the cross. I too deserve death. Jesus promised the thief that he would be in paradise that day because of his belief. Jesus’ body and blood brought in the new kingdom, His kingdom. Only those who believe are part of that Kingdom of God, which is here in part but will be here in full when He returns. I look forward to that day, a full restoration. He reigns.
How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him
Who brings good news, good news
Proclaiming peace, announcing news of happiness
Our God reigns, our God reigns
Chorus:
Our God reigns, our God reigns
Our God reigns, our God reigns
