suggested summer reading

Posted on May 17, 2008 by Norman Sennema

Imagine having the perfect mentor, someone who knew you inside out and was able to direct you exactly in the way you needed to go.
In his book, The Divine Mentor, Wayne Cordeiro writes to remind us that we do.
Reading this book I was struck by the simplicity of what he says, and yet how important it is.
The comments inside the cover state:

“Think about what you deal with daily. Maybe you suffer the wear and tear of long commutes and even longer work days. Or you find yourself juggling endless e-mails, phone calls, and text messages.
Noise. Chatter. Crowds. Politics. Talk radio. Television. Bills. Worries. Responsibilities. Deadlines. Endless chores. Demanding children. Relational bruises.
Life wears on us. We can’t evade most of it, and that’s not the solution anyway. What we need to do is protect the most important part of us… that deep down, soulish part of life that links us with our Creator.
In The Divine Mentor, you will discover how to enjoy a dynamic, vital, and intimate relationship with God as you hear Him speak daily through the Bible. You” embark on an adventure that will introduce you to His handpicked mentors, men and women who may save your health, your marriage, your ministry, and your future.
Wayne Cordeiro challenges you to develop a lifelong habit – the one thing Jesus says is truly necessary – that will preserve your soul, etsablish your legacy, and hold God’s Living Word inside you.”

What I like about this book is that it offers a practical way of hearing God, and of disciplining ourselves to journaling those messages.
I’ve been using the SOAP method that he promotes for over a year, and I can confirm that there is something valuable and beneficial here.

In fact, it is my hope to develop this SOAP model in my new church, as together we seek to grow as followers of Jesus in mission together.
So if you are from Ajax, and reading this… consider reading this book this summer!

Thanks for sharing this Reta. I am not familiar with the PACE study, but will look into it. I am very hopeful that we can develop a solid discipleship foundation for our ministry at crossroads. Please feel free to share some of your own SOAP reflections on this blog as well. I have really come to appreciate how the Lord speaks through our collective observations and applications. — Norm

I picked up this book this weekend and plan to make it part of my summer reading. In fact our small group has been doing the PACE study in which Wayne Cordeiro was one of the speakers. I have been attempting to apply more discipline to my daily scripture reading using SOAP so I was excited to see that you have been using it and have plans for develop use of SOAP at Crossroads!

think about it!

Deliberate with caution, but act with decision; and yield with graciousness or oppose with firmness.
