SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 14:1-18
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION
- The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning. [6] To seek wisdom is a good thing, but this proverb suggests that sin (like being a mocker) can hinder the discover of wisdom. A mocker is someone who speaks in a derogatory manner, which indicates a closed, uncaring heart. This kind of heart is not able to recognize wisdom. Contrast a mocking heart with a discerning heart. The one acts as if it already knows (ie critical, judging of others), while a discerning heart is open to listening, learning and growing. Its no wonder knowledge comes easily.
- The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception. [8] A wise person is always reflecting on their hearts and lives, but the fool is deceived, thinking that they are OK, that the problem is “out there”. Its ironic that we are so good at seeing others’ faults, yet so blind to our own. Sometimes people give lip service to their own faults (“I know I’m not perfect but…”) but they do not really give careful thought to their own ways. They are too busy seeing the flaws in others.
- Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. [13] I am reminded by a book about the comedian, John Candy, called “Laughing on the Outside”. Never read it, but I can guess what its about. How many people put on a good front, but inside they are broken and aching. Don’t assume that people who look happy are. I know that from all the ‘suits and dresses’ I’ve seen in church, as well as the plastic smiles and “I’m fine”s I hear. We need Jesus to help us on the inside!
PRAYER:
Lord, help me to open my heart to You, to allow You to change me from the inside. Help me to recognize the ways I am deceived, and help me to change.
