Taking God seriously

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 101
In this Psalm, David is sharing how serious he is about God.
It sounds like he is bragging, and maybe he is.
We know from the story of his life that he did not always live or act this way.
I would not recommend singing about your devotion this way in church.
But what he expresses here is helpful, if it encourages us to take God seriously too.
To see sin and dangerous, to see morality as important, to do what it takes to stay on the right path.
Sometimes the message of grace lulls us into apathy and indifference.
As if no matter how bad we sin, God will forgive us anyway.
Forgiveness is free, but it takes effort to hold on to it.
If I put $100 in your hand, it is yours, a free gift.
But unless I wrap my hand around it, and do something with it, I will drop it, lose it.
Grace is free, but we need to take hold of it, invest it, allow it to work itself in us.
We have everything we need to live differently, with God’s help, if we take Him seriously.
We do not need to earn salvation, but we do need to work it out.
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:12-13)

PRAYER
Lord, You have graced me beyond my deserving. Help me to take You and Your salvation seriously. Help me to seek it, not just talk about it.
