Reflecting on Acts 3:11-26
“For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.'” (Acts 3:22)
Peter refers to Deuteronomy 18:14-22, where Moses talks about “the prophet”.
Moses seems to be referring to prophets in general, but also to one specific prophet.
There were many prophets that came after Moses, who spoke in God’s Name.
But they were not like Moses, through whom God made the covenant with Israel.
Moses was the greatest OT prophet, but an even greater Prophet was coming.
The Jews understood this prophet as God’s Messiah (meaning Anointed One).
Through their history they kept waiting for this Prophet.
They tested each prophet that arose, to see if they were the One.
Peter is declaring that Jesus is the One, the ultimate Prophet Moses referred to.
As such, Jesus is the One that we should be listening to… not Moses.
As a Jesus follower, Moses is a sign that points me to Jesus; not the destination.
Many Christians dwell on Moses (the OT) as if he speaks God’s ultimate will.
Moses and his covenant was temporary, until the Ultimate One would come (Galatians 3:23-25).
Jesus, not Moses, is the Voice of God to us, the One we should listen to.
This is why I do not treat the OT as equal to Jesus; Jesus is my Moses!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Moses was great for the people of Israel in their time, but he is not the One. You are the One, the One that I listen to. May we as Your followers listen to everything YOU tell us!
