PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 26:17-30
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me.” (Matthew 26:23)
Those who eat together typically share a bond together.
To ‘break bread together’ is an expression of deep fellowship or communion.
Jesus is showing Judas the love bond that exists between them.
At least, for His part, Jesus offers Himself fully to Judas, for Judas.
His hope with these words was to convict Judas, and turn his heart and mind.
Was it hard for him to eat the bread and drink the cup with Jesus?
My guess is Judas put it out of mind, focused on Jesus’s flaws, and on the money.
He goes ahead with the betrayal, and offers Jesus a kiss (26:48, another intimate sign).
But in the end it was too much, and the shame of betrayal broke him.
He regretted what he had done to the One that loved him, and took his own life (27:3-5).
I sometimes think of this moment when Judas was eating with Jesus, and Jesus said this.
Are there moments when I put Jesus out of mind, and think more about my pleasures?
‘The one that shares the meal with me will betray me…’ — does Jesus say this about me?
The Spirit of Jesus wants to convict us, before like Judas we regret it too!
PRAYER
Lord, there are selfish thoughts and pleasures that distract me from You. Help me remember that these are betrayals too, even as I share the table with You, and cling to Your love for me.
Hospitality.
Eating bread together. Family. Togetherness. Oneness.
Yet the question was for all. One will betray me.
Self examination.
Whom am I serving? The Lord or self.
God, my God is in charge and I must always live for my King.

Jesus knew and Jesus knows! He knew the room would be prepared. He knew what he would at the Passover – and he knew Judas – the words here are written as a record – at the time the disciples had no idea what was coming – but Jesus knew. Later on they would realize that Jesus knew – affirming and yet affirming again that he is the Messiah – the son of God. Jesus knows me too! Nothing is hidden from him – so why do I act deceptive at times – Not me Lord? What is the sense of being in denial? Jesus knows!
