Who does Jesus celebrate?

Posted on September 10, 2019September 5, 2019 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 9:33-37
“Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
Among chickens, there is a pecking order… among humans too.
We want to establish ourselves in a good place, to rise up in the ranks.
There is something normal and healthy in this… God created us to valued.
But the curse of sin has twisted this into a game of ‘king of the hill’.
The disciples of Jesus were playing this game too… is that different today?
Does the church focus on the stars, the celebrities, those who perform well?
Jesus was not a performer, nor did He celebrate the performers.
Jesus did His best to downplay public acclaim, to stay humble and invisible.
And His focus was on the little and invisible people as well.
Children, women, outcasts, ‘sinners’… Jesus celebrated these ones!
These are the ones that Jesus celebrates, that He seeks autographs from…
As Jesus followers, have we set up our own pecking order?
Do we value those with visible gifts and positions more than the invisible ones?
Do we celebrate everyday people in our church, and value their presence?
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, how easy it is to slip into the world’s pecking order, and even to build it into the life of Your church. Help me to see the true heroes and stars among us, and help me to be like them, like You!

    ‘As far as it depends upon me, live at peace with all mankind.’
    Love – putting others before yourself.
    The joy principle keeps one humble. Jesus is first – Others are second – you(yourself) is last. This will keep you from trying to be the greatest.
    I am here to serve and not trying to king of the castle.
    I need to be a servant to all.

    Let me be as Christ to you;
    Pray that I may have the grace
    To let you be my servant, too.

    We are pilgrims on a journey,
    We are brothers on the road;
    We are here to help each other
    Walk the mile and bear the load.

    I will hold the Christlight for you
    In the night-time of your fear;
    I will hold my hand out to you,
    Speak the peace you long to hear.

    I will weep when you are weeping,
    When you laugh I’ll laugh with you;
    I will share your joy and sorrow
    Till we’ve seen this journey through.

    When we sing to God in heaven
    We shall find such harmony,
    Born of all we’ve known together
    Of Christ’s love and agony.

    Brother, let me be your servant,
    Let me be as Christ to you;
    Pray that I may have the grace
    To let you be my servant, too.

think about it!

Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness.
