SCRIPTURE: John 19:12-16
“We have no king but Caesar.” (John 19:15)
The religious leaders are pledging loyalty to Caesar.
Many religious leaders in Nazi Germany did the same to Hitler.
What about religious leaders that side with political leaders today?
Christians should be political (i.e. involved in societal concerns).
But should they be loyal to political leaders or parties?
The only ‘prince’ that we can put our confidence in is Jesus.
All other leaders will fail and disappoint.
We should pray for them, but we should avoid adopting their platforms.
“We have no king (or prime minister, or president) but Jesus”.
Don’t be liberal, conservative, republican, democratic, be a Jesus-follower.
The most reliable political platform there is.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, forgive us for adopting worldly policies and platforms, while ignoring Your platform. I vote for You!
Observations/Application
Pilate was a ruler whose authority changed with the wind. And although he found Him innocent did not carry out the judgement by his own but gave Him up to his accusers. The mob which days before shouted Hallelujahs now shouted crucify Him.
Who is in charge? The ruler or the masses?
The ruler cannot be a people pleaser, but must do right, what is good and true. The office of ruler has great responsibilities and is a lonely task but as with all offices, we must carry out our responsibilities under God’s direction. It is Christ Jesus we are serving.
Who rules?
The Lord. He is King!
