Reflecting on John 20:1-10“They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.” (John 20:9)
On many occasions Jesus told His disciples about His death and resurrection.
The disciples feared the death of Jesus, but they could not comprehend the resurrection.
Death was something everyone would eventually face, and hopefully not too soon.
But rising from death just didn’t happen, it was not in the realm of possibility.
And so whenever Jesus talked about it, they did not understand wHim.
After He died, as far as they were concerned, Jesus was done.
Then the rumours started about Jesus rising, but still they couldn’t accept it.
After three years with Jesus, seeing the signs and hearing Him teach… still not.
How can it be that Jesus followers still not understand, right to the end?
Actually, this is not strange, and it applies to all of us.
We think based on what we know, and this limits and biases our faith.
We talk as if the faith as we conceive of it is the way it actually is.
What a surprise we are in for when we finally see Jesus, and our minds are opened.
In the meantime, let’s stop being certain that what we know is how it is.
God is able to do immeasurably more than we can imagine… one day we will understand!
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I understand some things, but there are many things that I don't understand. And even what I do understand is flawed and incomplete. Help me to hold my thoughts loosely, and be open to being surprised when You finally return!
We see through a glass darkly. My view is limited. But one day I will truly see and hear and understand all what the Lord did for His own but in the meantime, I will continue to serve and follow Him.
