PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 5:13-16
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13,14)
Salt, when added in a helpful measure, helps improve the taste of food.
Light, when shining in a helpful manner, helps improve how we see things.
Both salt and light, in appropriate ways, are good, and make things good.
But light can be blinding, and salt can be overpowering, and ruin our experience.
How others experience my saltiness and lightness will differ from person to person.
What Jesus is urging here is that my presence be helpful to others.
Enough salt to help things taste better, enough light to help people see better.
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18)
I cannot control how other people experience my salt or light.
But for my part, as far as it depends on me, if it is possible, I want to be helpful.
I want to be salty in a good way, and to bring light in a helpful way.
We are here to be good for something rather than “no longer good for anything” (Matthew 5:13).
Our good taste and light will bless others, and help them taste and see God.
Let people “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8) through you.
PRAYER
Lord, I want to be salt and light in a good way, to be good for you and others. Infuse your good taste and light in me, that it may spread through me to others.
“it gives light to everyone”- How do i bring light? I do believe that believers do bring light – bring an important perspective wherever they go. I’ve seen it and experienced and witnessed it myself. We are a ‘light’ – and in a very respectful and unassuming matter we should bring light. The HS helps us and equips us – it is how we bring hope. That is why our work in Disaster and advocacy is so important. Not to be thumping the Bible – but to share the values that we have learned and live them out and share them. And in close conversations allowing us to share the hope we have in Jesus!
LightShine.
Reading this passage reminds me of the children’s song 🙂
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
Hide it under a bushel, no!
I’m gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bushel, no!
I’m gonna let it shine,
Hide it under a bushel, no!
I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine
Don’t let Satan blow it out
I’m gonna let it shine
Don’t let Satan blow it out
I’m gonna let it shine
Don’t let Satan blow it out
I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
Let it shine til Jesus comes
I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine til Jesus comes
I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine til Jesus comes
I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
Today, in all my activities, how do others see me? A kingdom kid?
I need to live in word and deed giving praise to my Saviour
as His Spirit empowers me each day to live for Him
in all I do and say.
