PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 76
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise.” (Psalm 76:10)
Some synonyms for ‘wrath’ include fury, rage, extreme anger.
But how can wrath bring God praise?
We need to be clear: God is love, God is not wrath.
Some kind of love is the source of God’s wrath.
For us that love is usually self-love, when someone hurts us.
But God’s love is selfless love, love for us and others.
God’s love is kindled when people or creation are being mistreated.
In this Psalm, God is not just having a selfish temper tantrum.
God is rising up “to save all the afflicted in the land!” (Psalm 76:9)
God’s righteous anger is presently restrained by mercy and love.
But God remains passionately committed to the underdog.
We see God’s wrath unleashed through Jesus’s death on the cross.
God condemns sin and death so that sinners can be rescued and restored.
One day the “afflicted” will bring praise when God pronounces judgment!
PRAYER
Lord, help us not just to receive your love for ourselves. May we be passionate to share this love with the poor and struggling around us, so they too may praise God for this loving wrath!
“Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them; let all the neighboring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared.” There are lots of things that drive me – motivate me. Yet my priority needs to have a ‘God’ focus. Yes I must be Godly minded but I must also be of good to my neighbour/to the earth. The more I am led by the HS the more I’m challenged to fulfill my my vows to God and Jesus will help m be a blessing to others – especially when the fear of God – of uncertainty strikes my neighbour. God is the righteous judge – but I need not ‘fear’ God – if I may know him as ‘Abba’ Father. But those who do not have reason to fear and tremble. Help me rescue them – all that you enable me to interact with – work in an through me I pray!
God’s will will come to pass. God’s love for His people is tough love, desiring His people to serve Him and praise Him. We were created for service sharing His love in creating a peaceful and just world. God’s anger is His disapproval of the injustices and broken promises that destroy that peace. Give thanks each day anew for His faithfulness and compassion to all who serve Him. May His presence dwell within me so that I am a channel of His peace.
