PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 29
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders!” (Psalm 29:3)
What might God’s Voice sound like, if we could actually hear it?
When God spoke to Jesus, some thought that it was thunder (John 12:29).
David doesn’t know what God’s Voice sounds like, but he imagines it is powerful.
More powerful than the forces of nature, like thunder, lightning, or a hurricane.
His point isn’t that God is scary, but greater than the greatest powers we know.
In the raging storm, Jesus did not have to yell to be heard and obeyed.
“He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39)
Jesus is the Voice (or Word) of God made flesh, living among us, speaking with us.
As He speaks, God speaks, and amazing things happen.
Jesus appears like an ordinary human, weak and limited like the rest of us.
But the Voice of God, the same Voice that created everything, speaks through Him.
His words are the words of LIFE (John 6:68); when He speaks, things happen.
Whether I am in a storm, or in a time of peace, Jesus is Lord over it all!
“The Lord sits enthroned over the flood… He blesses his people with peace.” (Psalm 29:11)
PRAYER
Lord, so many voices clamor in my head for attention, trying to frighten and destabilize me. I choose to listen to Your Voice. Rebuke the noise in my head and grace me with your words, ‘Quiet! Be still!’
the Psalmist paints images of power, of authority – God’s voice speaks and things happen – powerful things that effect nature- the land, the sea, the skies – and yet the protective hand that shelters the birth of a new baby deer! Our God is awesome and powerful – yet protective – He cares for me! Jesus exhibited the same voice – the calmed the storm and raised the dead to life. He is God and my Saviour!
Remember Samuel and the voice of the Lord speaking to Him?
Remember Elijah and the voice of the Lord speaking to Him? Or Moses? Or David? Or . . . ?
I too need to hear His voice saying, ‘This is the way. Walk in it.’
His voice created everything He is everywhere. I just need open eyes and open ears to see Him and hear Him. He is the wind beneath my wings lifting me up and strengthening me to do His will. My world belongs to God and His presence is everywhere.
In the stars His handiwork I see,
On the wind He speaks with majesty,
Though He ruleth over land and sea,
What is that to me?
I will celebrate Nativity,
For it has a place in history,
Sure, He came to set His people free,
What is that to me?
Till by faith I met Him face to face,
and I felt the wonder of His grace,
Then I knew that He was more than just a
God who didn’t care,
That lived a way out there and
Now He walks beside me day by day,
Ever watching o’er me lest I stray,
Helping me to find that narrow way,
He’s Everything to me.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name (Ps 29:2). Lord Jesus forgive me I am easily distracted and have not given you the glory that is due your mighty name, the name above all names.
